All Things Local: What’s Your Craft Beer-sonality??

“I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer.”  Abraham Lincoln

If you visited our office at Abby Glenn~A Quiet Cove and asked us anything about the local culture, you may have gotten more than you expected.  I love the Tennessee Valley so I can go overboard bragging about all there is to offer in our “small” town.  This is the first installment of our All Things Local series about our wonderful, diverse, city and the variety of things available to our residents.  Our story about great beer comes to you just in time for the 6th Annual Rocket City Brewfest May 9th and 10th, 2014.

Let me begin by saying I have never considered myself a “beer” person.  However, being the huge fan of all things local, I wanted to understand the hype and discover what so many of my friends were talking about…the local craft beer scene.  Thus my experience began, on a bar stool, at the tap room of Straight to Ale a little over a year ago.  Since then I have obtained my beer-ducation from Carie Partain, a member of Huntsville Chapter of Free the Hops, the organization who lobbied and changed the beer laws allowing us to enjoy “home” brewed in this great State of Alabama.  A few visits to tap rooms also helped to further my research.

Be it IPA, Dubbel, Stout, or one of the many other types of beer, here in the Huntsville / Madison Alabama area, we have many local brewers in which to choose.  For those of you who haven’t ventured into the craft beer world yet, (trust me – you are missing out) or if you need “continuing education” credit, the Huntsville / Madison area has just the hops for you.

Here are a few of our local brewers with tap rooms to get you started on your craft beer journey.

  • Straight to Ale – 3200 Leeman Ferry Road, Huntsville.  Straight to Ale has a tap room open seven days a week, 3PM until 10PM.  Join them for game nights every Tuesday or for their live music events.
  • Blue Pants Brewery – 500 Lanier Rd, Bldg 1, Suite A, Madison.  Blue Pants tap room is open Mon – Wed 3PM until 10pm and Thur-Sat 3PM until Midnight.  They have trivia nights and live music two nights a week.
  • Yellowhammer – 2406 Clinton Avenue West, Huntsville.  Yellowhammer tap room is open Fridays 4PM until 9PM and Saturdays 2PM – 9PM.  They have a biergarten under construction which will open soon.
  • Salty Nut Brewery – 4411 Evangel Circle Northwest, Huntsville.  Salty Nut tap room opens at 5PM Thursdays and Fridays and 3PM on Saturdays.

As an added bonus many of the local food trucks are on hand serving their wonderful food to pair your beer while the the tap rooms are open.

Other local brewers you will want to try include Rocket Republic Brewing and Brew Stooges.

You can find many selections at local grocery stores, but if you want to sample a variety, be sure to try Wish you Were Beer.  They have a great selection of beers on tap for you to sample in the store so you can leave with the choice you enjoyed best (or purchase one of the many hundreds of other craft selections they stock).  Just don’t try to sample everything all at once!  Craft beers are sipping/savoring beers, not chugging beers!  Be mindful of the ABV (alcohol by volume) in your craft beer!  Some styles are typically higher gravity than others and you could be consuming more alcohol in one tasty beverage then 2-3 of the mass produced beers out there. Next time you’re headed out to dinner, think of restaurants such as Pie in the Sky, Mellow Mushroom, and Drakes all of  which support and serve the local beers.  Also check out Below the Radar who serves their own brew as well as many other brands.

Best of all, you can get a sampling of our local options, as well as other Alabama craft brewers in one place this weekend at the Rocket City Brewfest.  The event is held at the Historic Huntsville Depot and Roundhouse in downtown Huntsville.  Along with beer,  there will be food from local vendors and entertainment.

And so, I will leave you with a toast for now, “May you always have love in your hearts and a beer in your belly!”

Of course, Abby Glenn~A Quiet Cove encourages you to stay safe and drink responsibly by choosing a designated driver or calling a cab.
